Call script from the International phone bank.

Perez just got this. Fresh, hot, and awkwardly verbose. Also notice the concern for workplace issues. So, how are these calls going?

CHW Update Phone Script
Worker Name:

Hello. I'm _ _ calling from your union, SEIU-UHW. We are calling all SEIU U-H-W members to update you about what's going on with our local union.

Q1. Do you still work at CHW [facility name]?

Q2. Have you heard anything about what's going on? The International Union has taken responsibility for running your Local. Two weeks ago, secretary of Labor Ray Marshall issued a report that found that the U-H-W leadership engaged in financial malpractice with members' money. The officers and the executive board of the local have been removed but everything else remains in place. Your contract is in full force and all your rights and benefits are protected. The stewards at your workplace are still in place. Members will still vote on their contracts and elect their bargaining committees.

Q3: We have heard reports that people may be trying to weaken the union by encouraging people to sign forms revoking authorization to deduct dues. CHW is covered by a union security clause which means that everyone is required to pay dues. Cancelling the dues deductions only means people will have to pay individually. But what it really does is weaken the union by sending a message to management that we are not united. Every person who tells management they don't want their dues deductions is telling management they don't stand behind their union and their contract. We will become weaker in management's eyes and they will be less likely to respect that standards in working conditions we have fought so hard for over the years. It's unfortunate that people who have been removed from office because of financial malpractice or are unhappy with a decision made by the union leadership would express their unhappiness by weakening the union. [how is this a question?]

Q4: Has anyone approached you to sign a revocation form or petition?
Get details (When, Who gave it to them, What did they say?):

If Yes: Did you sign it?

If Yes: No matter what we think of the decision to trustee the local or anything else that has been debated in our union, its important that we continue to show management a united front and be the strongest possible union that we can as we deal with issues in our workplace and continue to improve wages and benefits in future bargaining. Would you be willing to rejoin the union and sign a new card for dues deductions?

If No: Skip to below

If No: Can we count on you to help maintain a strong union that continues to win the best wages, benefits and working conditions possible by refusing to sign any forms or petitions that attempt to weaken the union?

If Yes: Skip to Q5

If No: Agitate and try to move if possible.

Q5. There is a lot of misinformation out there and we want to make sure we keep as many people informed as possible. Who among your co-workers in your area are really respected by others who you think that we should make sure we talk to?
(Get names, depts., phone numbers, shifts)

Q6: We want to make sure our contact information is correct on you so that we can keep you informed about what is going on.
Verify - home phone, cell phone home address, e-mail, shift, job class, work status - update any changes on the form.

If someone brings up a workplace issue/grievance/arbitration: I will have someone call you back as quickly as possible or you can call the union at 866-660-5235.

Thank you for your time -- We will be in touch soon to keep you updated and informed. Can I give you a number to write down to call if you hear anything about this or if you have any other questions?

Great- it's toll free 866-660-5235.

What is Perez Stern?

SEIU staff and officers think they can hide in the dark. Already in their hostile takeover of UHW they've injured members, held boss-style captive audience meetings for staff, and refused to give us their names.

Andy Stern and his appointees love to think they're rich, famous, powerful, and accountable to no one. A member led union just doesn't fit in with their plans for stardom! They like to drive around in SUVs with tinted windows, acting like they (literally) own the place.

So if they want to be famous, let's help them! If you're an SEIU member or employee, tell Perez what the SEIU trustees and appointees are up to, and help them feel just like Paris Hilton.

If you have a story or pictures for Perez, email him at perezstern@gmail.com We promise to respect your anonymity, but we encourage you to use your real name if you can.
